Shot on East 10th Street and around New York City between 2009 and 2013, these images document the intimate journey of making a film together. Coffee in Veselka; Saul’s chaotic treasure trove of an East Village apartment; and vintage transparencies.
In 2009 I wrote to Saul and suggested I make a film about him. I sent letters, postcards and old work. Eventually he agreed to meet me for coffee.
I turned up at the building on East 10th Street and rang his buzzer. After an impossibly long time, he opened the door and said ‘why do people always want things from me’. He turned around and went back inside. It was only when I could hear him laughing to himself and saw him gesturing me in that I dared step inside.
